Nutplates

A nutplate is a self-locking nut riveted behind a panel, so a screw can go in from the front without a hand behind it. The shape decides where it fits; the thread decides the size. Every figure on the sheets below comes from the MS standard named on it.

How to choose one

Shape from the space. Two lugs where there is room either side of the screw, one lug or side by side on narrow flanges and edges, corner where two flanges meet. Miniature and reduced spacing types fit tighter rivet patterns.

Floating types let the nut move in its retainer, for holes that may not line up exactly.

Nylon insert types (MS21078, MS21080, MS21081) are rated to 250 °F; the all-metal ones to 450 °F.

Then the thread, from the screw. Check rivet spacing J against the existing holes before ordering: it changes with type and size. The part number decoder finds the row for any MS number and the weight of a batch.

Limits — when NOT to use this

  • Approved data governs. Use the nutplate the maintenance manual or IPC specifies.
  • NAS nutplates (capped, deep counterbore, replaceable element) are not here yet: their figures need a primary source before they are published.
