Sheet Layout: Marking Before You Cut

Everything on the part goes on the flat sheet first. Good layout means one cut. The two rules that catch people: never use a pencil on aluminium, and check the grain before you draw a bend line.

The drawing

Where to buy
A blank sheet marked with grain, a bend line, a rivet row with crosses, pitch and edge distance
After FAA-H-8083-31B pp. 4-3, 4-4, 4-19, 4-58, 4-59. Typical only: edge distance and pitch come from the drawing or SRM.

Step by step

1Read the drawingBase measurements, alloy, thickness, bend radii.
2Check the stockPlate and sheet carry code markings about every five inches. Confirm alloy and temper.
3Keep the film onMark on the membrane, on masking tape, or directly with a fine fibre-tip pen.
4Lay out the flat patternWork out setback and bend allowance first: calculator.
5Check the grainBend lines should lie at 90° to the grain if possible.
6Mark the rivetsRows, edge distance, pitch; a rivet spacer gives quick 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 2 in patterns.
7Check itCombination square for 90° and 45°; dividers to transfer a measurement. Then cut.

Questions people actually ask

Why not a pencil?

The graphite in a No. 2 pencil can cause corrosion on aluminium.

Limits of this guide

What the sources support, and no further.

  • The manual governs. Where the SRM, the drawing or the fastener maker says otherwise, follow them; this page explains general practice.
  • Marks that remain: cleaning and finish rules come from the manual.
