Current standard: NASM316. AN316 is now controlled by NASM316 (AN316 Rev. 11 Notice 1). The part numbers do not change: AN316-4 is still the number on drawings, IPCs and bags, and it is the same part. Order it by that number; the current document is NASM316.

Part number

What each code means

PartMeaning
FormatAN316{material}<dash>{hand}
-Material: Steel, cadmium plated (standard; hyphen kept before the dash number)
CMaterial: Corrosion-resistant steel, passivated (C replaces the dash)
(none)Hand: No hand suffix
RHand: Right-hand thread (R after the dash number)
LHand: Left-hand thread (L after the dash number)
ExampleAN316-7L — Steel jam nut, 7/16-20 UNF-3, left-hand thread (AN316-7R = right-hand; AN316C7L = corrosion-resistant steel, left-hand)

Notes from the standard

  • Thread T per MIL-S-7742, countersunk 110 degrees to the O.D. of the threads, both sides.
  • (a) AN316-16 is inactive for design after 30 Oct 1964; use AN316-18 for new design. For sizes smaller than 1/4 use nut AN315.
  • Unless otherwise specified, tolerances: fractions +/-1/64, angles +/-1 degree. Remove all burrs.
  • Dimensions in inches. In the event of a conflict between the text of this standard and the references cited herein, the text of this standard takes precedence.
