Notes from the standard

• Complete threads: thread T to MIL-S-7742, class 3A. Screws with National Class 3 thread may be substituted for Unified Class 3A until existing stocks are depleted; Unified Class 3A is mandatory on all screws supplied after 1 Jan 1956 (requirement 7).
• Preferred point styles: A flat, B cone, D cup, E half dog, F oval. Types C (full dog) and the second type D cup point drawing are inactive for design.
• Hexagon socket and fluted socket setscrews may be specified with any point style shown; a knurled point on a type D setscrew may be supplied as optional (requirement 3).
• (a) Socket depth A is as great as practicable; varying conditions make it inadvisable to specify definite values. (b) The socket end of the screw is flat and chamfered; the chamfer extends to the bottom of the thread and the edge between flat and chamfer is slightly rounded. For UNC threads 0.250 in and larger the chamfer is at the option of the manufacturer, but the angle does not exceed 45 degrees.
• (c) Nos. 3-48, 5-40, 10-24, 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16 and 1/2-13 coarse thread setscrews: inactive for new design after 1 Jul 1954. Slotted head setscrews: inactive for new design after 1 Jul 1954; use hexagon socket setscrews. Nos. 2 and 6 fluted socket head setscrews: inactive for new design after 15 May 1994. No. 4-1 is inactive for new design after 15 May 1994. The No. 2 size is non-preferred for airframe use.
• (d) Oval point radius N tolerance: +.015/-.000 for nominal sizes No. 2 thru No. 5, and +.031/-.000 for nominal sizes No. 6 and larger.
• Type B point angle Y: 118 degrees +/-2 for lengths at or under the figure shown, 90 degrees +/-2 for lengths over it (as tabulated by size).
• The list of setscrews considered as standard stock items is in specification FF-S-200 (requirement 6). Parts manufactured prior to Rev. 7 (15 Jan 1996, as printed) may be furnished until exhausted (requirement 8).
• Dimensions in inches. Unless otherwise specified, tolerances: fractions +/-1/64, decimals +/-.005. Dimensions are in accordance with ASME Y14.5M-1994. In a conflict between the text of the standard and the references cited, the text of the standard takes precedence.
• Slotted head dimensions (E, J, K) are on the drawing as a struck-out block (inactive for design) and are not tabulated here: the scan is partly obscured by the strike-through.
