Structural Adhesives: Epoxy Paste and MMM-A-132

A structural adhesive is stiff, carries load and cures hard. The common two-part epoxy paste is LOCTITE EA 9394 AERO, qualified to MMM-A-132. This page gives what the Henkel bulletin states and leaves the repair design to the SRM.

Two-part epoxy paste adhesive (LOCTITE EA 9394 AERO)

Where to buy

What it is. A two-part epoxy paste adhesive for structural bonding, which Henkel says meets MMM-A-132 Rev B, Type I, Class 3, Form 3, Group 1.

What it is for. Bonded metal and composite repairs where the SRM names it; also fillet and gap work in some procedures.

How it is used. Mix the parts in the ratio on the kit, apply to prepared, clean surfaces, assemble and hold. Surface preparation (clean, abrade or etch, prime) is as the SRM says. We did not read a mix ratio or pot life for this exact product, so none is given: use the Henkel TDS.

Life and cure. Normal performance after 3 to 5 days at 77 F (25 C). An accelerated cure up to 200 F (93 C) is allowed for small masses only (Henkel).

Safety. Epoxy hardeners are skin sensitizers in general; read the SDS for this product.

Specification. MMM-A-132 Type I Class 3 (Henkel). One distributor cites an older revision: check the current one.

Equivalents. Other MMM-A-132 adhesives exist, but strength and temperature class differ. The SRM names the adhesive.

Adhesive or sealant?

A sealant keeps water and fuel out and stays flexible. A structural adhesive carries load and is stiff. AC 43.13-1B par. 6-134a lets a structural adhesive or sealant fill a blend-out that could trap water, but a load-carrying bond is a repair design that the SRM must cover. Fillers for epoxy are in the fillers guide; the sealant classes are in the sealant types guide.

Questions people actually ask

How long is the pot life?

It depends on the product, the mass and the temperature. Henkel lists values per product; we do not give one for EA 9394 AERO because we did not confirm it.

Can I speed the cure with heat?

Henkel allows an accelerated cure up to 200 F for small masses only. A bonded structural repair follows the SRM cure cycle.

Is a paste adhesive the same as a film adhesive?

No. Film adhesives come on a carrier and cure with heat; we found no data we could cite for them.

Limits — when NOT to use this

What the sources support, and no further.

  • One adhesive. Only EA 9394 AERO is given, and only the figures we read.
  • No mix ratio or pot life for it; read the TDS.
  • No film adhesives. We did not find a public sheet to cite.
